Background

A former member of an elite Navy squad similar to the SEALS, Sven Holgersson was on "administrative leave" when he was approached by Hawkins and Brown; this leave was taken while his superiors tried to decide what to do with him.

Their uncertainty stemmed from an incident involving an insurrection in a amsll South American country several months earlier - an insurrection during which there was a serious miscommunication, causing the foreign national Sven was supposed to extract to open fire on him, believing Sven to be an assassin sent to kill him. Sven's report indicated that he had no choice but to return fire, protecting himself and eliminating the extraction target. The tentative ruling on the matter was indeed self-defense...but given Sven's record, the Navy brass is as yet undecided as to whether he should have been returned to active duty or not.

Little information is on public record concerning Sven Holgersson's early life; it is known that he was born to Swedish parents, raised in and around Reykjavik, Iceland, and that he came to America and joined the military when he was nineteen. Everything else remains classified - including a series of psychological tests administered by Icelandic clinicians when Sven was in his early teens.

Anxious to get back in the thick of things, Sven paid immediate attention to the situation described by Hawkins and Brown...
